If you have already tasted any of Madeleine Dring's music, you will know how beautifully crafted it is and, above all, what a wonderful thread of joy and humour runs through it. Madeleine composed mainly small-scale pieces, much of the time for her own use as a singer, pianist, and (when young) violinist. You won't find symphonies among her manuscripts, but you will find a wealth of compositions that are witty, clever, entertaining, challenging, and very often FUN. Take the Caribbean Dance for piano, the Polka, the Italian Dance for oboe, or the whole pile of show-songs; it's impossible to perform any of these without a huge grin on your face! It's not all a jolly romp, though; set against this light-hearted backdrop is a substantial body of 'serious' work - serious in both senses of the word: the music is very finely written, with outstanding musicianship and technique, and it is also serious in content and intent. Madeleine's output of nearly 60 art songs many of which tackle the thorny issue of Love in all its guises, show her to be a deep-thinking and sensitive individual, with an extraordinary talent for translating raw emotion into imaginative musical terms. The music is accessible, too, and tonal (no plink-plonk!); and although never easy, it's well within the technical capabilities of most musical performers. There are pieces specially written for children's fingers, too. We invite you to explore - or rekindle your interest in - the music of Madeleine Dring. Much more of it is now in published form, and available for purchase. If a piece is still in manuscript form, we can point you towards its location, and may even be able to supply you with a copy.
